Canva T-Shirt Design for Print on Demand: Step by Step

Part of our Canva for print on demand guide.

A t-shirt is the classic first print on demand product, and Canva is a popular place to design it. This guide walks through the steps, from the idea to the upload, and shows where you can save time. Before you start, read the rules in our guide to using Canva for print on demand: your design must be original, and Canva content cannot be printed as-is, as Canva's own help page explains.

The seven steps to a t-shirt design

  1. Pick a niche and an idea. A design for a clear audience sells better than a generic one.
  2. Start from your supplier's print area. Check the template size and resolution your supplier asks for, and create your Canva design to match.
  3. Create original artwork. Use your own composition. Do not copy brands, characters or another artist's style.
  4. Keep text readable. Use large, high-contrast lettering and leave a margin around the design.
  5. Export a high-resolution file. A PNG is the usual choice. Check whether your plan lets you export with a transparent background.
  6. Test on light and dark shirts. A design that works on white can disappear on black. Adjust the colors or add an outline.
  7. Upload, place and publish. Upload the file to your supplier, place it on the front, check the preview and write your listing.

Design tips that prevent print problems

The same t-shirt from one prompt

Seven steps, plus the Canva skills behind them. Here is the short path with an AI studio such as Magicmoon, from one prompt:

  1. Describe the design you want.
  2. Keep the one you like.
  3. Choose the shirt, the colors and the supplier.
  4. Review the listing the AI writes, then publish.

It is not magic: you still pick and approve. But you skip the layout work, the export settings and the manual upload.

Where you lose time, and how to skip it

Steps two to five are creative. Step seven is repetition: upload, place, preview and write the listing, again for every product. A tool that connects your supplier and your shop in one interface takes that repetition away. Magicmoon lets you import your finished Canva file as PNG, JPG or WebP, choose the product, place the design, generate the listing and publish, with Printify or Gelato as supplier and Etsy, Shopify or WooCommerce as shop. Orders are still produced and shipped by your supplier.

You can also skip Canva for the artwork: describe the design and let the AI create it. Our Magicmoon review shows how.

Frequently asked questions

What size should a Canva t-shirt design be?

Use the print area size your supplier publishes for the product, and a resolution high enough for print. Sizes differ between suppliers and products, so check each one.

Can I use Canva templates for a t-shirt I sell?

Only if you turn them into an original design. Canva says you cannot print its content as-is, and some print services require you to own the copyright, which rules out Canva content.

Is Canva enough, or do I need another tool?

Canva is enough to create the artwork. The supplier setup, the listing and the publishing happen elsewhere, which is why many sellers add a tool that connects them.
